Practicing Green Fishing Techniques

Today's anglers can take simple steps to maintain the quality of  fishing  sites and reduce fish mortality counts by following these guidelines:
  • Always use a wet/damp towel when removing the lure from a fish and keep the handling to a minimum.
  •
  • Know the regulations of the body of water that you are fishing, as some have mandatory artificial lure requirements. With the vast variety of artificial lures available that are so life-like -- consider bypassing the live worms, leeches and minnow.
  •
  • Use barbless hooks if you intend to catch and release the fish you catch.
  • If a fish is deeply hooked, do not attempt to remove the hook as this causes more harm. Instead clip the leader and release the fish back into the water.
  •
  • Be cognizant of the time of year as during the warmer months of summer, trout in particular are stressed and any additional handling may kill them. Likewise in the spring when the panfish head to the shallows to spawn.
