How to Clean a Freshwater Fishing Reel.

It is important to clean your freshwater fishing reel seasonally.  Like any prized tool it requires seasonal maintenance to keep it performing at it best and extends the reels life.

1: Remove the line from the spool.  If it is any consolation, fishing  line should be replaced  at minimum yearly as sunlight deteriorates the strength of the line quickly. If any fishing line showing signs of discoloration, exhibits a dry feel, or has a fine, white powder coming from the line itself it should be replaced immediately.

Step 2 Check your reels manufactures website for reel dismantling instructions. Typically you will unscrew the drag cap and remove the spool.  Then take off the handle cap and unscrew the winding handle in the clockwise direction. Systemically lay out the parts as they are removed to aid in the re-construction process.

Step 3 – Rinse the entire reel with hot water to remove any sand or grit. Use a water displacing fluid such as WD- 40 that adheres to the surface to force remaining water to fall off the fishing reel.  Let the real dry completely.
